GIOVANNI
Even-tempered and confident, Giovanni takes pride in his field of work and dreams of learning more than he was able to from his father and grandfather, neither one with him any longer. He is deeply responsible, taking care of his brother, Ruggiero, alone and one summer, of his employer's son, Paul, as well. He is strong-willed, withstanding the gossip and ill feelings of his peers in San Giustiniano and furthermore very dedicated, having had a secret relationship to Paul's father for a decade, since he was 19 years old and the other man, twenty years his senior. This loyalty is what shapes him, to such a degree that even after he leaves Italy for Canada, he keeps in touch with his Sciusciù, as he calls Paul's father, and in the end admits that he never found any other love than theirs. Giovanni is a mild-mannered, self-assured dreamer who is not afraid of holding on to what he wants, even when it seems impossible that he'll ever have it. Yes, even when he - at the end of the road - never gets it.

background
Giovanni is the latest sprout on a family tree full of cabinetmakers, having resided in San Giustiniano for at least five generations. Although he was academically inclined, he gave up his studies to pursue cabinetmaking and woodwork like his father and grandfather and when his father dies, leaving him and his brother on their own, when Giovanni was only 25, he took on the task of being Ruggiero's teacher and guardian. He dreams of being a journeyman who travels from place to place and learns woodwork from others around the world, but is stuck on this island in Southern Italy. When he was 19, he met his Sciusciù, a twenty year older man with a family, who swept him off his feet and as he kept returning to San Giustiniano every summer on vacation, they kept seeing each other. Over time, they began meeting on the mainland during winter and established themselves as a dedicated, but forbidden affair. Little by little, the townspeople of San Giustiniano began catching on to what was happening and the rampant homophobia made it difficult for Giovanni to stay there. One summer, after having developed a friendship with his lover's unsuspecting son, the local Mob used the family's vacation house as a drug den after they had left for winter. Ruggiero found this den and in an effort to catch him, the local Mobsters rounded up all the young men in the town and humiliated them by stripping them and beating them. Giovanni had also been taken in and, knowing about his relationship to Sciusciù, the local police tried making him have sex with a randomly chosen man. However, this man was Ruggiero and Giovanni refused to do as they told him to, no matter how much they beat him up over it. Finally, Ruggiero fled and packed up everything they had, breaking Giovanni out of the prison he had been relocated to and the two escaped the island, travelling to Canada with Giovanni's lover's help.
